Fishing
Fishing is one of the main reasons we spend time here. You can fish directly from our pier, or explore the Esefjord and surrounding waters by boat.
The fishing is varied, with the most commonly caught species including haddock, whiting, cod, gurnard and mackerel, while sea trout and several flatfish species are also present. Most of the time it's standard fjord fishing, but every now and again something special turns up.
We can provide fishing rods and lifejackets, and we're happy to share what we've learned about fishing locally.

Fishing from the pier
One of the simplest ways to fish here is straight from our own pier. There's no need for a boat — just set up a rod and fish directly into the Esefjord.
A surprising variety of fish can be caught from the pier, and we've also had some rather more unexpected visitors.
It's particularly pleasant on a summer evening, sitting by the water and watching the rods.

Fishing by boat
A small boat opens up much more of the Esefjord and the surrounding waters. The fjord here is relatively shallow, and much of our fishing is simple drift fishing with light tackle, moving around until we find the fish.
We don't provide a motorboat with the house, but boats can be hired locally. Guided fishing trips are also available from Balestrand for those wanting to explore further afield.

Every now and again...
Most of the fishing is for the usual fjord species, but occasionally something rather more memorable turns up. We've caught some excellent sea trout here, and over the years we've also encountered the occasional halibut while fishing for other species.
Halibut fishing is now prohibited in this part of Norway. Any live halibut caught accidentally should be released.

Both fish were caught from our pier on summer evenings — sea trout, 5lb 8oz; halibut, 35lb.
Some of our most memorable evenings have been spent sitting on the pier with a couple of rods, waiting to see what might turn up.
