About the House
Our house sits on the shore of the Esefjord, a few kilometres from Balestrand. It has four bedrooms and comfortably sleeps five.
It isn't a luxury holiday home. It's an older Norwegian house that we use ourselves and have gradually renovated and improved over the years. It's simple, practical and comfortable, with its own pier and boathouse just across the road.
Simple, practical and comfortable
The house is warm, comfortable and well equipped, but it hasn't been turned into a luxury holiday home. We've kept much of its original character and furnished it simply, with a mixture of new, second-hand and home made furniture.
There are four bedrooms, sleeping five comfortably, together with a kitchen, bathroom and living room. The house has everything needed for a straightforward self-catering stay, without pretending to be something it isn't.
The accommodation
The house has four bedrooms: one double, one twin and two single rooms. We limit the house to a maximum of five guests. There are also spare folding beds which can be moved between rooms if guests prefer to sleep separately.
There is one downstairs bathroom, with a shower/wet room, toilet and washbasin. The washing machine is also located in the bathroom.

The Kitchen
The kitchen is equipped for everyday self-catering, with an electric cooker, microwave, slow cooker, fridge/freezer and dishwasher. There is plenty of cookware, crockery and the usual kitchen equipment.
There is no television or Wi-Fi. Mobile coverage is good, however, and we normally use mobile data with our phones as Wi-Fi hotspots.
By the fjord
The house sits on the shore of the Esefjord, a short distance from Balestrand. The fjord is just across the road, with our own pier and boathouse directly below the house.
The pier is a place for fishing, using a small boat, sitting outside or simply watching the fjord. The boathouse provides useful space for fishing gear, lifejackets and other equipment.
Is No Frills Norway right for you?
This is our own holiday home rather than a purpose-built rental property. It will suit people who are happy with somewhere simple and practical, and who are more interested in the fjord, fishing, walking and exploring the area than luxury accommodation.
We know the house and the area well and are happy to answer questions before you decide whether it is the right place for your stay.
Why "No Frills Norway"?
The name goes back to an idea I had long before I bought the house. I thought there might be room for simpler, more affordable accommodation in Norway, particularly for people who came primarily to fish rather than for luxury.
“No frills” is a British expression for something simple and straightforward, without unnecessary extras. It was also used for famously basic supermarket own-brand products, which is where the slightly tongue-in-cheek name came from.
The idea has evolved over the years, but the name has stuck. The house is comfortable and well equipped, but still deliberately straightforward. We'd rather concentrate on the things that matter – a good place to stay, the fjord on the doorstep, and the freedom to Relax • Fish • Explore.
